April 24, 2023 marked the 10 year anniversary of the Rana Plaza building collapse in Dhaka, Bangladesh, an industrial tragedy of unprecedented scale in which over 1,110 people died and more than 2,500 were left injured. In the immediate aftermath, activists on the ground dug through rubble trying to find clothing with tags to identify who might be held accountable. The collapse left families forever changed; husbands, wives, sisters and brothers lost; children left without mothers. While the conditions which led to the accident and the longer term worker advocacy efforts which followed have, rightly, been widely covered elsewhere, the accident led to a shift in the apparel sector. It catapulted issues of abuse and neglect in apparel supply chains into the global public consciousness, giving campaigners who had been active in this sector for many years previously a more visible platform for their activism.
