Seafood Traceability Practitioner’s Workshop Summary Report
https://www.stimson.org/2022/seafood-traceability-practitioners-report/
The Workshop participants raised numerous key ideas to remove barriers and improve seafood traceability, including:

The need for adopting standardized, secure electronic data through the seafood supply chain to facilitate reporting requirements and improve enforcement against IUU fish imports.

Increased interoperability of seafood data tracking systems across platforms as more market states adopt new traceability schemes, data requirements, and increase data collection.

Seafood traceability programs can be more effective with harmonized key data elements (KDEs) across different market state platforms, as well as common understanding of the KDE requirements for catch documentation and traceability.

The importance of electronic data systems to ensure the integrity and accurate verification of catch and traceability data.

Traceability systems should adopt electronic catch documentation and move away from paper-based systems, which can be easily falsified.

Innovative technologies to manage and analyze big data should be used in seafood traceability including blockchain, which can verify and store data in an online platform, should be sought to help organize and best make use of the large amounts of data collected.

Vessel traffic data, or Automatic Identification System (AIS) data, are collected by the U.S. Coast Guard through an onboard navigation safety device that transmits and monitors the location and characteristics of vessels in U.S. and international waters in real time. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Center have worked together to repurpose some of the most important records and make these records available to the public. These records are sourced from the U.S. Coast Guard’s national network of AIS receivers called the Nationwide Automatic Identification System. Information such as location, time, vessel type, speed, length, beam, and draft have been extracted from the raw data and prepared for analyses in desktop geographic information system (GIS) software. Note that Marine Cadastre does not have access to live AIS data feeds or more recent data than what is provided on this webpage.

https://www.bakerinstitute.org/research/chinas-logink-logistics-platform-and-its-strategic-potential-economic-political-and

LOGINK began in 2007 as a provincial-level truck and logistics tracking system in Zhejiang and by 2009 was expanding to all Chinese provinces, a process that unfolded alongside efforts to establish a unified document submission portal. In 2010, LOGINK began to incorporate data from the Northeast Asia Logistics Information Service Network (NEAL-NET), which initially covered container ship operations in the ports of Ningbo-Zhoushan (PRC), Tokyo-Yokohama (Japan), and Busan (South Korea). Six years later, the network included 11 Chinese ports, five Japanese ports, and three South Korean ports.

Fast forward to today, and LOGINK has become a world-scale information and intelligence funnel aggregating data from more than 450,000 users in China, 5 million trucks, multiple public databases in China, more than 200 Cainiao logistics warehouses worldwide, CargoSmart (which live tracks more than 90% of global container ships), Chinese domestic ports, and up to two dozen foreign ports.

Access to foreign port community systems amplifies LOGINK’s data haul. LOGINK’s cooperation agreements and partnerships include PortBase (Netherlands), Maqta (UAE), and Network of Trusted Networks data from the International Port Community Systems Association (IPCSA), whose members include tens of ports worldwide. Port community systems offer a critical entry point because once LOGINK is plugged into their data streams, PRC firms will not even necessarily need a physical presence at a given point in the supply chain to achieve significant data visibility and insights into cargo flows. With such expansive tentacles, LOGINK provides the most comprehensive picture available of national — and increasingly, global — logistics activities and, according to one analyst, is a decade ahead of rival information systems.

Who owns farmer's data
https://datavaluesdigest.substack.com/p/who-owns-farmers-data
Farmers and food producers, especially in low- and middle-income countries, face immense challenges: price increases on the input end against notoriously low and unstable prices on the output end, extreme weather events, shifting consumer demand, and rapidly changing regulatory environments—to name a few. Like other industries, the agricultural sector responds to these challenges with digital technology. Think of precision agriculture technologies such as sensors and drones, which can be used to monitor crop health and optimize inputs, while AI can analyze data on weather patterns, market demand, and supply chain logistics to improve decision-making. Many of these resources, however, are restricted to large farm owners that can afford them.

Paper; Global mining footprint mapped from high-resolution satellite imagery
https://www.nature.com/articles/s43247-023-00805-6

Mining is of major economic, environmental and societal consequence, yet knowledge and understanding of its global footprint is still limited. Here, we produce a global mining land use dataset via remote sensing analysis of high-resolution, publicly available satellite imagery. The dataset comprises 74,548 polygons, covering ~66,000?km2 of features like waste rock dumps, pits, water ponds, tailings dams, heap leach pads and processing/milling infrastructure.

New study reveals fine detail on location and scale of mining sites worldwide
https://news.mongabay.com/2023/05/new-study-reveals-fine-detail-on-location-and-scale-of-mining-sites-worldwide/
We live at the center of a spiderweb of global mining supply chains. The vehicle that took you to the market, the rechargeable battery in your headphones, and the phone or computer you’re reading this article on right now — all required the extraction, processing, transport and sale of minerals that likely originated from points all over the planet. But measuring the cumulative impact of these supply chains, which can span multiple continents and involve dozens of entities, formal and informal, is a tricky business. A new study published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment may have just given a big boost to anyone looking for a clear picture of what those supply chains look like at their point of origin. Using high-resolution satellite data, researchers meticulously pored over images from across the globe, isolating and marking the boundaries of a combined 65,585 square kilometers (25,323 square miles) of mining sites. The data set, which includes large-scale mining operations as well as informal artisanal sites, is one of the most detailed ever created. And to make sure that others can build off their work, the study’s authors have made it available to the public for free.

https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/how-rana-plaza-catalyzed-transparency-movement-lessons-grillon/
April 24, 2023 marked the 10 year anniversary of the Rana Plaza building collapse in Dhaka, Bangladesh, an industrial tragedy of unprecedented scale in which over 1,110 people died and more than 2,500 were left injured. In the immediate aftermath, activists on the ground dug through rubble trying to find clothing with tags to identify who might be held accountable. The collapse left families forever changed; husbands, wives, sisters and brothers lost; children left without mothers. While the conditions which led to the accident and the longer term worker advocacy efforts which followed have, rightly, been widely covered elsewhere, the accident led to a shift in the apparel sector. It catapulted issues of abuse and neglect in apparel supply chains into the global public consciousness, giving campaigners who had been active in this sector for many years previously a more visible platform for their activism. What did this look like in practice?

Open database on global coal and metal mine production
https://zenodo.org/record/7328050#.Y7_kExWZND8
This data set covers global extraction of coal and metal ores on an individual mine level. It covers 1171 individual mines in 80 different countries, reporting mine-level production for 80 different materials in the period 2000-2021. Furthermore, also data on mining coordinates, ownership, mineral reserves, mining waste, transportation of mining products,as well as mineral processing capacities (smelters and mineral refineries) and production is included. The data was gathered manually from more than 1900 openly available sources, such as annual or sustainability reports of mining companies. All datapoints are linked to their respective source documents. After manual screening and entry of the data, automatic cleaning, harmonization and data checking was conducted. Geoinformation was obtained either from coordinates available in company reports, or by retrieving the coordinates via Google Maps API and subsequent manual checking. For mines where no coordinates could be found, other geospatial attributes such as province, region, district or municipality were recorded, and linked to the GADM data set, available at www.gadm.org.

Article, Ghost Ships
https://logicmag.io/pivot/ghost-ships/
Squinting against the sun, I tried to imagine the ships another way: as numbers on a screen, cells in a spreadsheet, dots on a grid. I’d been reading about the information transfer that accompanies the movement of these vessels, and I knew that the scale of this data is nearly as impressive as the ships’ sheer size. Ships like those docked at Long Beach are vital links in the global supply chain, but they’re also floating “data terminals,” as the global maritime industry consultancy Lloyd’s Register put it in 2015. Increasingly, these vessels receive and transmit an enormous amount of information: about their position, of course, but also about weather, traffic, temperature, maintenance, staffing, ocean conditions, and much more. The streams of information are so complex that they threaten to exceed humans’ ability to interpret them. That’s partly why many newer vessels—“smart ships,” in industry parlance—use complex algorithms (some of them devised by Google and Microsoft) to chart their courses. Within the next decade, carriers hope to launch fleets of automated or remote-controlled vessels—“ghost ships,” as they’re sometimes called.

Managing and sharing product information across the entire value chain is still a fundamental challenge for the consumer goods and retail industry. The Board of The Consumer Good Fo- rum (CGF) acknowledges the need to move urgently and at scale beyond current industry and organisational paradigms to drive a step-change forward via the Product Data Coalition of Action. Most of the current initiatives have focused on managing and sharing product master data across the industry:

(1) verifying GTINs globally
(2) defining and maintaining a core set of product attributes and
(3) ensuring the best possible data quality via a consistent approach based on Data Quality Business Rules. In addition, there is a voluntary innovation track which has focused on new technologies to leapfrog data exchange (4) via DataPorts.

One of the key premises is that new technologies such as Arti- ficial Intelligence (AI) promise a future for data transformation, validation and exchange that is likely to be more responsive and accurate than current approaches. For that reason, we are currently exploring “DataPorts” as a new, easy and cost-efficient way to exchange data in a decentralised, federated manner across the whole value chain (including consumers), lever- aging technology innovations in cloud/APIs, AI and Machine Learning (ML). This new way of peer-to-peer data exchange allows for more automation and flexible dialogues between systems of trading partners.

Article, A data-sharing approach for supply chain visibility
https://www.brookings.edu/techstream/a-data-sharing-approach-for-greater-supply-chain-visibility/
Amid the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, rising inflation, the war in Ukraine, geopolitical tensions in East Asia, and more frequent extreme weather events, manufacturing supply chains continue to struggle in bringing goods when and where they are needed. These disruptions have affected all aspects of end-to-end supply chains, producing demand shifts, supply and manufacturing capacity reductions, and coordination failures. Prior to 2020, most supply chain designs lacked the resilience needed to cope with these disruptions, and, in response, companies have tried to diversify their sourcing and increase inventories and manufacturing capacity, all of which have led to increased cost. Now more than ever, companies need a new paradigm for cost-competitive resilience if they are to redesign supply chains while maintaining their competitive advantages. Firms are increasingly turning toward better contingency planning, improving organizational readiness and worker flexibility, automation, and building more collaborative relationships with suppliers to improve supply chain resilience.

GS1 Digital Link Standard: URI Syntax
https://www.gs1.org/docs/Digital-Link/GS1_Digital_Link_Standard_URI_Syntax_r_i1-2-1_2022-02-08.pdf

This document provides some of the background to the design of GS1 Digital Link, highlighting existing techniques and practices that underpin the World Wide Web, and applying those to the GS1 system. The normative portions set out the detailed syntax of Web addresses (HTTP URIs) that encode GS1 identifiers with exactly the same precision and expressivity as the AI-based element syntax used across the GS1 system, notably in the GS1 General Specifications. The GS1 Digital Link URI syntax distinguishes between primary keys, such as GTIN and GLN, key qualifiers, such as batch/lot and GLN extension, and attributes such as expiry date and ship-to address. The GS1 Digital Link URI syntax is the foundation on which all other aspects of the standard are built.

GS1 Digital Link Standard
https://www.gs1.org/standards/gs1-digital-link
The GS1 Digital Link standard extends the power and flexibility of GS1 identifiers by making them part of the web. That means that GS1 identifiers, such as the GTIN, are now a gateway to consumer information that strengthens brand loyalty, improved supply chain traceability information, business partner APIs, patient safety information and more. Where a URL typically points to a single, specific website, GS1 Digital Link enables connections to all types of business-to-business and business-to-consumer information. If you’re adding a QR code or NFC tag to a product, using the GS1 standard means you’re not only providing a URL for people to scan, you’re also carrying GS1 identifiers – the same identifiers relied upon throughout industry – and following a non-proprietary, no vendor-lock system. This means the brand owner remains in complete control but can still link to any number of information sources, all from one symbol, saving space and improving efficiency.

This article lists the world's busiest container ports (ports with container terminals that specialize in handling goods transported in intermodal shipping containers), by total number of twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) transported through the port. The table lists volume in thousands of TEU per year. The vast majority of containers moved by large, ocean-faring container ships, are 20-foot (1 TEU), and 40-foot (2 TEU) ISO-standard shipping containers, with 40-foot units outnumbering 20-foot units to such an extent, that the actual number of containers moved is between 55%–60% of the number of TEUs counted.

Maritime transport statistics can be mind-boggling: estimated seaborne trade in 2015 –the most recent year recorded by UNCTAD– exceeded 10 billion tonnes. Upwards of 90 percent of world’s goods travel by ship. Of the world’s cargo aboard ships, some 40 percent was loaded in Asia. Oil transport accounts for nearly a third of world maritime trade. Some 346 billion cubic metres of natural gas was transported by ship worldwide. The global commercial fleet consisted of nearly 91,000 vessels in 2015. While bulk carriers and tankers account for 43 and 28 percent of the world’s fleet, containerships, only 13.5 percent of the world’s fleet, probably carry the largest percentage of the goods by value.

Esprit Supply Chain Transparancy
https://www.esprit.com/en/company/sustainability/produce-responsibly/transparency
Ensuring that our products are made in a clean and responsible way requires that we know a lot about our supply chain partners. Over recent years we have drastically reduced the number of supply chain partners we work with so that we can go beyond building business relationships and instead focus on creating a collaborative community. Working with fewer suppliers enables us to really know them, understand their needs and challenges, and support them to achieve our standards. Includes supplier list in excel.
